Luzerne County Courthouse -Travel Blog

I represent medical professionals in their criminal and civil professional license disciplinary case. The criminal court hearings occur all over the Commonwealth Pennsylvania. I really enjoy this travel aspect of my practice, allowing me to visit a variety of county courthouses. Today I had the pleasure handling a medical professional's criminal matter in the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas.

On this crisp November day I drove up interstate 476 to Wilkes-Barre. Having not previously handled a matter in Luzerne, I was awestruck by the court house. It's majesty, ornate styling and detailed decorations make it one of Pennsylvania's finest.

The corner stone was laid in 1906.  Exterior construction completed in approximately 1910. Interior artwork throughout the court rooms and ceilings was completed by local artistsins. In 1910, one of the artists was awarded the Medal of Honor for Mural Painters of America at the annual meeting of the architectural league of New York. In June 1980 Luzerne County Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historical Places.

The artwork and sculpture of the building is heavily influenced by the Wyoming Valley, the Susquehanna River, and the history of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The building is a tribute to local contractors and builders who performed masonry, iron work, and wood finishing. They hand made furniture, draperies, window shades, and obviously the paintings. Local quarries provided significant amount of foundation block and exterior walls.
