Addiction Center Fraud — Improper Prescribing and DEA Violations

3 convicted in $8M addiction treatment fraud scheme –…. Creativity rules the day here!.

Court documents and trial evidence show that Dr. José Alzadon, Michael Bregenzer, and Barbie Vanhoose, orchestrated their health care fraud scheme through Kentucky Addiction Centers (KAC), which operated in multiple locations. Alzadon, KAC’s medical director, improperly prescribed Suboxone as set forth under DEA regulations. Bregenzer was KAC’s CEO and Vanhoose was the billing manager.

Together they falsely billed taxpayer-funded health programs (Medicare and Medicaid) for medical services that were not performed or were falsely represented as more complex than the services provided. They falsely billed for services in the name of Alzadon’s elderly father to bypass insurance credentialing issues because Alzadon did not have DEA prescribing credentials to prescribe Suboxone. The father had not seen the patients for whom he was supposedly issuing prescriptions.
